Nystatin is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat certain fungus and yeast infections. It is considered the drug of choice for treatment of Candida infections. However, nystatin is not systemically absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and must come into direct contact with the organism to be effective. In the United States, nystatin is one of the few drugs approved by the FDA for use in egg laying hens.
One of the dosage forms available for Nystatin is Oral Oil Suspension. Wedgewood Pharmacy’s oral suspensions and solutions are a familiar and convenient dosage form. Oral suspensions and solutions can be administered directly into the mouth using a dosing syringe or mixed with a small amount of food. They offer a wide range of flavoring options, and flexible dosing adjustments.
Features of Nystatin For Chickens
Oxytet will help, but may not be as effective as baytril. Alternatively, you can ask if you can bring in a swab from the back of your chicken’s throat to see if you vet can do a gram stain on it, rather than bringing the chicken in again for another expensive exam If the vet will allow it, take a clean Q-tip, swab the back of the hen’s throat and then put the swab into a sterile syringe case. Refrigerate it until you bring it to the vet clinic (do so within 12 hours of collection). A gram stain should tell you if there are budding yeast cells or a large number of bacteria. The vet may then choose to prescribe some drugs for your bird, having already seen her once. If there is a yeast infection, the nystatin is by far the best (1 ml/350 g body weight, orally, twice per day). Live culture yogurt will help, but not cure (especially if the infection is severe enough) a yeast infection. Crop infections can be deadly, as they slow and stop the movement of food through the digestive system, eventually starving the bird. There are no antifungals available that are safe to use on birds that are non-prescription… sorry… However, nilstat (nystatin) is not expensive at all.
