Free Stall Barn

Free Stall Barn: The purpose of a free stall is to provide a cow with a comfortable, clean, dry resting area. A good free stall allows the cow to enter and exit the stall with a natural reclining, resting, and rising motion without striking the stall structure. The purpose of a free stall is to provide a cow with a comfortable, clean, dry resting area. A good free stall allows the cow to enter and exit the stall with a natural reclining, resting, and rising motion without striking the stall structure. Well designed free stalls present minimal opportunity for injury, pain, or frustration. Some free stall design considerations involve trade-offs between optimal stall usage and cow cleanliness. Providing the largest cows in the herd with maximum resting space may mean that even slightly smaller cows may have more opportunity to soil the rear of the stall with manure and urine. For example, research has shown that cows spend more time lying in wider free stalls; however, these same stalls were not as clean as the narrower stalls. Thus, the maintenance requirements may increase for stalls that provide better conditions for cows to lie.

Features:

  • Hard packed earth
  • Concrete
  • Mattresses
  • Hard and soft rubber mats

Regardless of base material, a layer of bedding material is needed to provide additional cushion, absorb moisture, help keep the cows clean, and restrict bacterial growth. Low cost and ease of handling are desirable. Mixtures of different bedding materials are often used. Effect of bedding on manure handling systems should also be considered. Various organic and inorganic materials are used for bedding such as:

Organic materials

  • sawdust
  • cornstalks
  • straw
  • peanut hulls
  • hay
  • chopped or shredded paper
  • shavings
  • recycled manure solids

Inorganic materials

  • sand
  • field lime
  • limestone screenings
  • gypsum
