Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. When needed for treatment of an infection in a rabbit, these drugs should be prescribed only by a veterinarian well-versed in rabbit medicine. Infections caused by bacteria can occur anywhere in the body. The best way to determine which type of antibiotic will be most effective against a particular infection is to take a sample of infected tissue (for example, a small section of the wall of an abscess, or a surface swab of the affected area), and send it to a laboratory for culture and sensitivity testing. It is advisable to have both an aerobic and an anaerobic bacterial tests performed to best determine what medications will be most effective.
In some cases, the infection may occur in an difficult-to-access place, such as inside the respiratory tract, urinary tract, inside of the eye, intestinal tract or bone. In this case, the veterinarian may need to make a “best guess” about which antibiotic is best to treat the problem.
Doxycycline is a well-tolerated tetracycline antibiotic, registered for use in rabbits and administered for treatment of bacterial infections in this animal species. Nevertheless, the available pharmacokinetic data are limited and this study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetics of orally administered doxycycline in mature and immature rabbits by application of the population approach. The rabbits were treated orally with doxycycline hyclate (5 mg/kg bw) in the form of a solid gelatin capsules
The last thing you want to do when your rabbit is sick is make them feel worse. Unfortunately, rabbits try to hide signs of illness as long as possible. You don’t want to give antibiotics that aren’t needed. But, once you have a sick bun on your hands, they’re way less likely to get better without medical treatment than we are. Rabbits have especially sensitive digestive systems that are easily thrown out of wack by antibiotics. Antibiotics can eliminate some of the “good” bacteria in the gut, allowing for an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Some antibiotics are safer than others, but all carry some risk of causing problems.
