Spread through egg and contact with infected litter, feed or water. Aerosaol spread also occurs. Severe ND, IBV or ILT reactions may occur after vaccination, especially if given by spray to chicks previously infected with mycoplasma or E. coli.

Effects: Signs include cough, tail bobbing when breathing, emaciation, rales, sneezes, open mouthed breathing, poor growth, decreased feed consumption, lowered egg production and poor shell quality.

Description

CRD is one of the most common causes of disease in backyard fowls. Chronic respiratory disease (CRD) occurs when chickens and turkeys that are infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum are stressed. The bacteria then causes major damage to the bird’s respiratory system.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum spreads via eggs, airborne transmission and indirect or mechanical routes such as introducing infected birds to an existing flock, or via bird transport containers. M. Gallisepticum can reside in a flock with few indications of its presence until the flock or individuals in it are stressed sufficiently to show signs of respiratory disease.

Features of Crd Vaccine For Poultry

“The infectious agent survives for only a matter of days outwith birds although prolonged survival has been reported in egg yolk and allantoic fluid, and in lyophilised material. Survival seems to be improved on hair and feathers. Intercurrent infection with respiratory viruses (IB, ND, ART), virulent E. coli, Pasteurella spp. Haemophilus, and inadequate environmental conditions are predisposing factors for clinical disease,” said Mr McMullin.

Signs of the disease are:

  • Coughing.
  • Nasal and ocular discharge.
  • Poor productivity.
  • Slow growth.
  • Leg problems.
  • Stunting.
  • Inappetance.
  • Reduced hatchability and chick viability.
  • Occasional encephalopathy and abnormal feathers.
