Chlamydia Psittaci Ewe Vaccine

For use in vaccinating healthy ewes to aid in control of Ovine Enzootic Abortion.  Ewes selected for breeding should be vaccinated with 2 ml subcutaneously in the neck 60 days prior to breeding. Revaccinate in 30 days and annually. 60 day slaughter withdrawal.  Anaphylactoid reactions may occur. Antidote : Epinephrine. Give the first dose at least 60 days before ewes are exposed to rams, followed by a second dose 30 days later. Revaccinate annually.

Description

 Enzootic abortion (sometimes called Chlamydiosis) was relatively unknown in the country until 1972 whereby there was a massive outbreak of abortions and stillbirths in ewes. In some flocks abortions were as high as 60%.

This disease is caused by an organism called Chlamydia psittaci and is one of the biggest causes of abortions and stillbirths in sheep and goats. This organism is found throughout the world, including South Africa. There are other syndromes associated with this disease, for example, respiratory tract and digestive tract infections. The organism may infect a wide range of hosts including cattle, birds and humans.

How to Use

Shake well before use. Aseptically inject 2.0 mL subcutaneously in the upper part of the neck 60 days prior to breeding. Repeat the dose 30 days later. Revaccinate annually using a single dose just prior to breeding. Store at 35–45ºF.

Precautions

Do not vaccinate within 60 days before slaughter. Use entire contents when first opened. Read all warnings and cautions on label. For livestock use only. Anaphylactoid reaction may occur following administration of products of this nature. If noted, administer adrenalin or equivalent. Use a products containing oil adjuvants may result in formation of a transient or more permanent granuloma of small to moderate size.
