Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is the most common cause of illness and death in cattle triggered by a complex interaction of stress factors, viral and bacterial infections. A range of factors can predispose cattle and calves to BRD. Stress can be caused by weaning, transport, sale yards, social restructuring, age, immunological background, dehydration and change of diet. Viral infections include Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) and Pestivirus (BVDV), whilst the bacteria Mannhaemia haemolytica is one of the most common and aggressive bugs involved in BRD.
In the early stages, BRD typically presents as inappetance with cattle appearing hunched and lethargic. As the disease progresses coughing and nasal discharge may be seen and cattle may appear depressed and withdrawn from the main herd. In many animals the disease may go unnoticed, silently impacting weight gain and meat quality. Like people, cattle get colds. When one person gets a cold it doesn’t take long for it to spread to others. Many of us work through having a cold and cattle are much the same however they have evolved to hide their symptoms to avoid being singled out by predators. If you see any symptoms of ‘a cold’ then it’s likely that there are many more challenged or infected cattle. During stressful times cattle are more susceptible to ‘catching a cold’. This includes periods such as weaning or where there is high density contact, like trucking or in sale yards. Disease can spread quickly and insidiously so it can be hard to notice.
BOVI-SHIELD GOLD ONE SHOT® is a combination vaccine that helps protect against three important bovine respiratory disease conditions while also providing effective protection against Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica.
Features of Brd Vaccine For Cattle
New Bovilis intranasal RSP live reduces the clinical signs of respiratory disease and viral shedding from infection with Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV) and Parainfluenza-3 Virus (Pi3V). No other UK-licensed BRD vaccine can be administered earlier in life. The new vaccine also delivers the fastest on-farm protection, with an onset of immunity after administration of just 5 days for BRSV and 7 days for Pi3V. Duration of immunity is 12 weeks for both viruses.
Benefits of Brd Vaccine For Cattle
- prepare calves for challenges they may face during weaning time,
- ensure calves are less susceptible to becoming infected with pathogens, and
- have a more rapid immune response to the various pathogens that cause BRD (Powell et al., 2012).
Helps prevent respiratory disease caused by infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus; helps prevent viremia caused by bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) Types 1 and 2 viruses; aids in prevention of respiratory disease caused by BVD Types 1 and 2 viruses, parainfluenza 3 (PI3) virus, and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV); aids in prevention of bovine pneumonia caused by M. haemolytica Type A1.
BOVI-SHIELD GOLD ONE SHOT® may be administered to pregnant cattle provided they were vaccinated, according to label directions, with any BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP® or PREGGUARD GOLD FP® vaccine within the past 12 months. BOVI-SHIELD GOLD ONE SHOT also may be administered to calves nursing pregnant cows provided their dams were vaccinated within the past 12 months as described above.
Do not use in pregnant cattle (abortions can result) unless they were vaccinated, according to label directions, with any BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP or PREGGUARD GOLD FP vaccine prebreeding initially and within 12 months thereafter. Do not use in calves nursing pregnant cows unless their dams were vaccinated within the past 12 months as described above. To help ensure safety in pregnant cattle, heifers must receive at least 2 doses of any BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP or PREGGUARD GOLD FP vaccine with the second dose administered at least 30 days prebreeding.
