Maintenance of Aquarium Cabinet 20 Gallon
There are several things you will need to monitor and adjust in order to keep your new aquarium healthy. The details of care can seem complicated at first, but they are actually quite simple once you have a routine established.
First, you will need to clean the aquarium regularly. You should remove any algae that has started growing on the glass or decorations and remove excess food from the bottom of the tank by siphoning it out with a gravel vacuum. This process also removes waste produced by your fish (their urine and feces) which is highly toxic if left unchecked. Additionally, you will need to replace about 20% of the water in your tank once a month with fresh water that is treated with chemicals to remove chlorine and chloramines which may be present in tap water. Aqueous substances called chelating agents should also be added when replacing the water to prevent minerals from sticking together so that they can be removed by your filter system instead of coating aquarium surfaces.
To make sure that everything is running smoothly, you’ll want to test pH levels weekly using an electronic tester or test strips which change color based on acidity levels. For freshwater aquariums like ours, pH level should stay between 6-7-5; anything below 6 indicates high acidity while anything above 7-5 causes alkalinity which could harm your fish. Ammonia levels can also be tested weekly using test strips; if ammonia is present at all, it means something has caused too much waste buildup in your tank so an immediate partial water change (10% – 15%) is recommended followed by more frequent partial changes until ammonia levels return to 0ppm (parts per million).
